Tim’s First Post – “Who the Hell Do I Think I Am?”
Huh? That’s a tough one. I guess I’ve never really asked myself that question before. The blank page that sat under that title for several long minutes is either a sign that I am so many things I don’t know where to begin or a hint that I don’t have the foggiest idea. I think for our purposes here and given the large cost of hiring a psychotherapist, we’ll go with notion #1.
Let me try to hit some of the main things that I am. I’m a case manager at a day treatment program in a middle school. I’m a husband and a cat daddy. I’m kind of funny sometimes. I’m a good story teller, but at times I drone on too long (whatever, I’m just building the story). I’m a guy who loves to be outside and while there I often talk out loud to the animals and then use a different voice that serves as their responses. I’m also crazy competitive with myself and sometimes others – in a good sport kind of way. But, most people who know me know me as a guy who loves to ride bikes.
A long time ago I went out on a date with a mountain bike; we went to a race in Lutsen, Minnesota. I was super nervous and had no idea what I was doing. Nevertheless, I went through the motions and used my best behavior. To make a long story short, we fell in love. The bike has changed her look over the years and I’ve gotten a few more scars along the way, but we’re still together. There certainly have been some rough patches between us, but there have also been some moments so beautiful that I’ll never forget them.
The bicycle has shown me many things over the years; most importantly it has shown me that I can be a better person. In fact, I think I can be better than I ever thought possible, in ways that have nothing to do with crossing a finish line first.
I’m a guy who can see the world a little differently from the saddle of a bike. I’d like to tell you all about it as my bike and I continue our love affair.
I think I can be that guy…
