Monday Podcast Pick

I’m three picks into this podcast pick thing. Check out the first and second picks if you’re new here. I’ve received some feedback from a couple people, so I know that it’s providing some people something and I’ll just keep moving along. This week is another overall show (I’ll highlight some specific podcast episodes sometimes too). Read on below.

Also, please remember, if you have any podcasts or podcast episodes that you think I or other MBR listeners would find interesting, please let us know and we can share. Just send an email titled “Podcast Picks” to [email protected].

Podcast

Here are the details about this week’s podcast pick:

Show Title: The Bill Simmons Podcast

Description: From the Bill Simmons Podcast website: “HBO’s Bill Simmons relaunches the most downloaded sports podcast of all-time with a different partner, new sponsors and a rotating crew of celebrities, athletes and media members, as well as mainstays like Cousin Sal, Joe House and other friends and family members who always happen to be suspiciously available.”

My Take: I’m not the traditional sports fan that I used to be. Currently, the sports I watch are pretty limited to catching some football and maybe ends of basketball games while I’m doing other stuff around the house. Other than that, it’s pretty limited to special events or one-offs like skiing, snowboarding, and other randoms like the upcoming NCAA wrestling championships (I was also really into the NFL combine stuff weirdly). However, I am still interested in sports and the ongoing soap opera nature of professional sports. I listen to a lot of sports talk – podcasts, internet, iheart radio, and simulcasts on tv that I have going in the background during the day. Bill Simmons fits right in there. Where else do you get to listen to Al Michaels say “fuck.” That was kind of funny hearing Al Michae’s classic voice, that I’ve heard since I can remember, say that. It’s like hearing your grandma swear for the first time. (In case you’re wondering about Al Michaels, go to Ep 63, about at 1hr 1 min into it)

The Bill Simmons Podcast is heavy on NBA, NFL, gambling talk, and the Patriots. But it’s interesting and you get to hear some honest takes. Plus, Bill Simmons has a lot of things cooking, which includes an entire site called The Ringer which will contain digital, branded and social projects, and other content and will be home to an entire podcast network.

What do you think? Have you listened to The Bill Simmons Podcast? I’d like to hear your thoughts.

Monday Podcast Pick

I know that I just started this podcast pick thing, but I wanted to get it on a regular schedule. I’m going to make Mondays the day of the pick. Also, please remember, if you have any podcasts or podcast episodes that you think I or other MBR listeners would find interesting, please let us know and we can share. Just send an email titled “Podcast Picks” to [email protected].

Anchored with April Vokey

Here are the details about this week’s podcast pick:

Show Title: Anchored with April Vokey Fly Fishing Podcast

Description: From April Vokey: “Join well known angler, April Vokey, as she interviews some of the most influential people involved in the fishing world today. Learn more about their careers, opinions, history, relationships, and life both on and off the water.”

My Take: This is a great podcast because of a few reasons. First off, after 30 years of watching fishing shows, reading fishing magazines, and now listening to podcasts and checking out websites, it’s refreshing to have a women’s voice out there doing something a little different and taking a great approach and attitude towards fishing and the fly fishing industry. She does a great job interviewing interesting guests and the overall feel of the podcast keeps you listening. You can tell that her days are packed with her tv stuff, website things, and who knows what else. It’s great to see anyone making things happen.

What Is This About?

I’ve wanted to start sharing podcasts and specific podcast episodes that I come across for a long time. I receive a fair number of questions about what podcasts I listen to but I only end up sharing my experience with people in 1-on-1 conversations via emails and messages. It’s great to share, but I feel like I could share with many more who may get something from it.

Many other sites and shows do “book” lists, but that never really seemed to make sense to me for MBR. My world is audio and you’re following along a podcast network, so you obviously listen to a good bit of audio. So, it’s finally time since I started this whole keyboard pen to electronic paper thing. You can just keep checking back here to get your weekly dose. Or, just bookmark the Podcast Picks Category.

It’s no secret that I listen to a lot of podcasts. You may get the idea that all I listen to are cycling-related podcasts, but this really isn’t the case. I listen to a variety of outdoor shows, cooking related shows, and a random mix of others and I’m always seeking out interesting information and topics.

The goal of this regular podcast picks series is to:

1)  Give you some shows and/or episodes that you maybe haven’t listen to or wouldn’t listen to without being prompted;

2)  Spur some conversation among all of us regarding various topics, whether it’s cycling or not;

3)  Not just share cycling related shows – it’ll include a variety of podcasts from various genres; and

4)  Expand my own topics and boundaries.

Hopefully we can all learn something new or dig into something we’re interested in more. If you have any podcasts or podcast episodes that you think I or other MBR listeners would find interesting, please let us know and we can share. Just send an email titled “Podcast Picks” to [email protected].

Meateater
Podcast Pick of The Week

I’m only starting with this podcast because I happened to be listening this morning as I worked. It’s not first because I consider it my favorite or anything like that – the order I post these has no real meaning. This one might seem like an oddball for you, coming from a mountain bike podcast website…

Show Title: The Meateater Podcast

Description: From The MeatEater: “The MeatEater Podcast with Steven Rinella (author and host of the biggest hunting show on television, MeatEater) covers hunting, fishing, wildlife, and wild foods with humor, irreverence, and plenty of unexpected viewpoints and surprising trivia. Recorded on the road from locations around the U.S., the podcast features a recurring cast of guests with their own areas of outdoor expertise.”

My Take: The MeatEater maybe isn’t for all of you. However, it’s an interesting podcast even for those who aren’t necessarily hunters. They discuss many aspects and topics from a respectful point of view and Steve Rinella (the host) is a really thoughtful and knowledgeable guy with a great take on the outdoors, hunting, and life. A particular episode I found interesting was Episode 25, in which they speak with a guy who use to do commercial halibut fishing in Alaska.

The normal podcast post definitely won’t be this long. I wanted this post to set the stage and give you a little who, what, when, etc.
